What is Microneedling and How Does it Work?
Microneedling is a treatment for fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation (brown spots), and can improve the skin’s overall appearance. During the treatment, tiny needles are used to create micro injuries to the skin. This will stimulate the skin to produce collagen and elastin. Microneedling in Orange County creates tiny micro channels that allow topical treatments (serums, gels and creams) to be absorbed into the skin. The results will be an improvement of the skin’s overall appearance.
What Skin Problems Will Microneedling Improve?
Microneedling can be performed on all skin types and all skin colors, and can be used on sensitive areas that may be difficult to treat with other procedures. Microneedling can be used on the face, around the eyes, neck, décolletage, and back of the hands.
- Mild to moderate acne scarring
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Pigmentation and discoloration
- Skin texture and tone
- Reduction in pore size
Treatment is usually recommended as a series of 3 to 6 procedures (depending on your skin condition) approximately 3 or 4 weeks apart. Each treatment takes about 30 minutes
Why Are Multiple Treatments Necessary?
Microneedling can be repeated every four to six weeks, and the number of treatments required will depend on overall response to the treatments. Most patients see results after the first treatment. For acne scar reduction four to six treatments may be recommended.
What Does a Microneedling Treatment Feel Like?
The skin may be pre-treated with Hyaluronic Acid or a Vitamin C serum. The skin is cleaned and a numbing gel may be applied. The small handheld Microneedling device is used to pierce the skin and a soothing topical may be applied to hydrate and protect the skin.
Before Your Microneedling Treatment in Laguna Niguel
Pre-treating the skin with Hyaluronic Acid will prepare the skin for Microneedling. If you have recently been in the sun tanning bed or used any self tanners you will need to wait at least 4 to 6 weeks before having Microneedling treatments.
A commitment to stay out of the sun during the treatment process is necessary because treating tanned skin increases the possibility of unwanted side effects such as pigment (color) changes. If you are planning a holiday in the sun we can help you plan your treatments around your holiday.
After Your Microneedling Treatment
Immediately after treatment you may notice a mild redness, and mild swelling. For 24 to 48 hours there may be minimal pinpoint bleeding or bruising. Within one to two weeks, the skin will appear smoother. The skin will continue to improve and the full benefits will be noticeable several months later.
For two to three days, avoid using retinol, glycolic acid or other acidic skin care/treatments. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the skin and avoid exposing it to additional heat or friction such as hot showers, baths, steam rooms, saunas and hairdryers. Avoid planning heavy exercise for up to 2 days after treatment, to prevent the skin from sweating and causing undue redness.
Use of a high factor sunblock (SPF 30) after treatment is recommended with consistent use of at least an SPF 15 sunscreen product. Mineral make-up can be carefully applied providing the skin is not sensitive. Mineral make up can also serve to protect the skin from sun exposure
