A neck lift is one of plastic surgery’s best-kept secrets. With this procedure, which is less common than a facelift but offers just as incredible of results, patients will automatically look like they’ve lost weight and that they are younger*. With these types of benefits, why wouldn’t you consider a neck lift as part of your cosmetic surgery plan?
Well, like most things related to plastic surgery, there are a lot of myths when it comes to neck lifts. One person hears this myth inadvertently perpetuated by a friend, and instantly he or she believes the procedure is not right for him or her. Well today, we’re here to bust myths. Continue reading for our list of three top neck lift myths debunked.
Myth #1 – Neck Lifts Leave Telltale, Visible Scars
Most patients who visit Natural Image OC come to our practice because they are searching for cosmetic work that provides natural-looking results. They understandably don’t want to look windblown or “done up.” One popular myth about neck lifts is that they always leave visible scars so that everyone will know you’ve had cosmetic surgery.
With a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Sikorski, that simply isn’t true. Her techniques for performing a neck lift on patients includes making incisions underneath the chin, ears, and hairline. Getting a neck lift in conjunction with a facelift minimizes additional incisions and, when possible, uses smaller incisions with an endoscope, which is a small camera attached to a very thin tube.
Myth #2 – You Must Go Under General Anesthesia to Have a Neck Lift
Some people have a general fear of being put under by anesthesia. Others may have had a bad experience before, as coming out of anesthesia may cause nausea, which can be unpleasant when you are first recovering from surgery. While many of Dr. Sikorski’s patients choose general anesthesia for neck lift surgery, it isn’t necessary. In fact, the procedure can also be performed using a gentler medication, including local anesthesia with sedation.
Myth #3 – Only Older Patients Get Neck Lifts
Many people incorrectly believe that since neck lifts are typically used to help a patient look younger, you must be older and showing considerable signs of aging. That couldn’t be further than the truth. First, the signs of aging don’t care how old you are; some patients begin getting creases and wrinkles on their necks in their 30s and 40s. Second, neck lifts aren’t just to reduce the signs of aging, but also to make you look thinner. If you have a large or heavy neck – regardless of your age – a neck lift can help you look slimmer.
